My Cross-country Trip
OR
"Motel 6 Across America"

I had always thought it would be fun to go on a cross-country drive.   So, for my 50th birthday, I decided to actually do it.   I started the initial planning almost a year before trip.   My wife has trouble riding in a car for long distances, so I planned to drive to the east coast and she would fly over and meet me there.

I picked Charleston, South Carolina, and Savannah, Georgia as the places we would stay.   Over the years I have heard how beautiful these cities are and all of the history associated with them.

So, I planned to drive Interstate 40 from where it starts in Barstow, all the way to the end in Wilmington, North Carolina.   Then I would proceed to Charleston.   It would take 8 days to make the drive across the country.   Then my wife would fly to Charleston and we would spend 4 nights there.   Then we would drive to Savannah and spend another 4 nights.   She would then fly home, and I would start the drive home mostly along Interstate 10.   This would take another 7 nights on the road.

The trip would take 24 days and cover 6,318 miles.  I used 243 gallons of gas, and got an average of 26 miles per gallon.   I took a total of 4,551 pictures with my digital camera. A large number of them didn't turn out all that great.   I took a lot of them with one hand, holding my camera up to the car window, while driving at 75 miles per hour.   But, quite a few turned out nice.

I departed on the trip April 16th, 2007.
