Day 8
Winston-Salem, NC to Charleston, SC
approx. 408 miles
Route: From Winston-Salem, I-40 to Wilmington (the end of I-40). Then Highway 17 to I-526, then various surface streets to Ashley River Road to the Inn at Middleton Place.



In the morning when I left, Highway 52 back to I-40 was jammed, so I took a few back roads to work my way around to it. I saw some nice rural areas with lots of trees and big yards.

I arrived in Wilmington, North Carolina. The end of Interstate 40. I turned around and headed down I-40 westbound, so I could get a picture of the sign showing the mileage to Barstow. The "end" of I-40 from the westbound perspective.

In Wilmington, there was an historic district with lots of statues, historic buildings and old mansions. On one street, there were plaques at about every house telling the history of who lived there.

Along Highway 17, I caught my first glimpse of swampy wetland areas. I would see a lot more of this in the coming days.

At Mytle Beach, there were a lot of flashy, outlandish looking restaurants and entertainment venues to attract the tourists.
