Located just west of the Amarillo area is the Cadillac Ranch.
Tom suggested I stop there. Thanks for mentioning that! Stopping there led to one of the highlights
of the trip. An artist bought these old Cadillacs at scrap yards and stuck them in the ground.
People stop by and spray paint them. The owner doesn't mind.
I stopped there and took some pictures. A couple other people were there at the time too. It's
in plain sight of the Interstate, so lot's of people stop. After I took my pictures and was walking
up to my car, a flock of Mustangs drove up. They were from a car
club that was on the way to a car show in Oklahoma City. I jokingly said that my car fit right in
with theirs,
and they invited me to drive along with them for as long as I wanted. I accepted their invitation
and rode along in the little convoy for the next 200 plus miles. We stopped in Amarillo for lunch
and for gas a couple of times, as well as in front of a Route 66 museum. That was a great backdrop
for taking some pictures.
The best part was when we pulled off of I-40 onto a section of old Route 66. One of the club
members has a father and cousin that work for the local police department. They arranged to
have a police escort along the route. The police cars would race ahead with lights and sirens
going and block off the intersections for us. It was really fun to be able to experience
something like that. I got to meet some really nice people too.
