I had a little "adventure" with the motel situation.
I was driving on Highway 52
north of downtown Winston-Salem enroute to the Motel 6 where I had a reservation
for the night.
A police car got on the onramp and was driving behind me.
Just a few seconds before he got on, I was tempted to accelerate around a Volkswagen
mini-bus in front of me.
Luckily, I didn't.
Even though I was doing a reasonable speed, I don't like police
cars driving behind me.
I was a little more concerned when he got off the same exit I did.
He continued to follow me and then turned into the Motel 6 parking lot right behind me!
I stopped at the motel office and was relieved to see him keep driving around the corner of
the building.
I was relieved, but not for long.
I checked-in and got my key.
My room was around the back of the motel.
When I drove around the corner, I saw 4 police cars and a police van parked
in front of one of the rooms.
Hmmmm.
I drove around the ottawon corner to my room, and the occupant
of the room next to mine was lying on the bed with the door open, checking me out.
I went to my room and the door was already unlocked and partially open.
I didn't like that very much.
I looked inside for a second and thought about whether I wanted to stay there or not.
I decided to go talk to the police and see what was going on over there.
When I walked by the room, there was a stretcher with a body covered by a sheet.
The police officers were taking several shotguns and rifles out of the room.
I jokingly asked them if this was a good place for me to get killed tonight.
One officer responded, "You can see what happened in there."
They asked me a few questions.
Was I staying here with my family?
Was I retarded or just a little slow? (just kidding).
I told them I was travelling by myself, and he said firmly, "I would recommend that you NOT
stay here tonight."
He didn't have to tell me twice.
They recommended a motel just 3 exits further along Highway 52.
I went back to the office, got a refund, and hit the road.
Sure enough, 3 exits later was a real nice area with a modern shopping center, a Holiday Inn Express, and a
Quality Inn.
I checked into the Quality Inn at a rate that was twice what the Motel 6
charged, but I considered it a bargain given the situation.
I went to a Chili's restaurant and celebrated still being alive.
I had a delicious grilled salmon fillet with rice pilaf and vegetables.
I also had a piece of strawberry cheesecake for dessert.
I really savored every bite of that meal!
